Black History: Will Smith
Willard Christopher "Will" Smith, Jr. (born September 25, 1968) is an American actor, film producer and rapper. He has enjoyed success in music, television and film. In April 2007, Newsweek called him the most powerful actor on the planet. Smith has been nominated for four Golden Globe Awards, two Academy Awards, and has won multiple Grammy Awards.
In the late 1980’s Smith acheived modest fame as the MC of the hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, with his childhood friend Jeffrey "DJ Jazzy Jeff" Townes as a producer. They gained critical acclaim for winning the first ever Grammy in the Rap category (1988). In 1990 the NBC television network signed him to a contract and built a sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, around him.
The show ran for nearly six years on NBC and has been syndicated consistently on various networks since then. In the mid-1990s, Smith transitioned from television to film, and ultimately starred in numerous blockbuster films that received box office success. In fact, he is the only actor in history to have eight consecutive films gross over $100 million in the domestic box office as well as being the only actor to have eight consecutive films in which he starred open at the #1 spot in the domestic box office.
Fourteen of the 19 fiction films he has acted in have accumulated worldwide gross earnings of over $100 million, and 4 of them took in over $500 million in global box office receipts. He also earned critical praise for his performances in Six Degrees of Separation, Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness, receiving Best Actor Oscar nominations for the latter two.

Sir Richard's Luxury Condoms
Sir Richard's and the Original Condom Co. claim to offer better, swankier condoms. Sir Richard's condoms come in graphic-designy wrappers and the name implies some sort of English elegance. But what’s even cooler about Sir Richard’s condoms is that for every condom you purchase, the company will send a condom to a developing country struggling with the AIDS virus.
Luxurious and giving, what could be better?

Black History: Jack Johnson
By 1902, Johnson had won at least 50 fights against both white and black opponents. Johnson won his first title on February 3, 1903, beating "Denver" Ed Martin over 20 rounds for the World Colored Heavyweight Championship. His efforts to win the full title were thwarted, as world heavyweight champion James J. Jeffries refused to face him then as the world heavy weight championship was then off limit to African Americans.
Johnson finally won the world heavyweight title on December 26, 1908 after beating the reigning world champion, Tommy Burns, which came after stalking Burns around the world for two years and taunting him in the press for a match.
In 1910, former undefeated heavyweight champion James J. Jeffries came out of retirement to fight Johnson. The "Fight of the Century" took place on July 4, 1910 in front of 20,000. In the 15th round, after Jeffries had been knocked down twice for the first time in his career, his people called it quits to prevent Johnson from knocking him out, Johnson earned $65,000 and silenced critics.
Johnson was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1954, and is on the roster of both the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the World Boxing Hall of Fame. In 2005, the United States National Film Preservation Board deemed the film of the 1910 Johnson-Jeffries fight "historically significant" and put it in the National Film Registry.
Muhammad Ali often spoke of how he was influenced by Jack Johnson. Ali identified with Johnson because he felt America ostracized him in the same manner because of his opposition to the Vietnam War and affiliation with the Nation of Islam.

Black History: Duke Ellington
A prominent figure in the history of jazz, and a figure in the Harlem Renaissance, Ellington's music stretched into various other genres, including blues, gospel, film scores, popular, and classical. His career spanned more than 50 years and included leading his orchestra, composing an inexhaustible songbook, scoring for movies, composing stage musicals, and world tours.
Many of the musicians who were members of his orchestra are considered among the best in jazz in their own right, but it was Ellington who melded them into one of the most well-known jazz orchestral units in the history of jazz. Ellington led his band from 1923 until his death in 1974. His reputation increased after his death, the Pulitzer Prize Board bestowing a special posthumous honor in 1999.

Black History: Dorothy Dandridge
In 1951 Dandridge had a successful run in the nightclub circuit as a solo singer, which eventually lead to her becoming an international star and performing at luxurious venues all over the world. She won her first starring film role in 1953’s Bright Road, opposite of Harry Belafonte.
Her next role was the eponymous lead in Carmen Jones in 1954 which lead to Dandridge becoming the first African-American to earn an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. In 1955, she was featured on the cover of Life magazine, and was treated like visiting royalty at that year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Following the success of Carmen Jones, Hollywood filmmakers could not seem to create a suitable role for the light-skinned Dandridge, and her career began to decline until her untimely death on September 8, 1965 of an accidental drug overdose.

Naomi Campbell’s Legend of Tsvetnoy Commercial
I'm not deaf, I understand 99% of the video is spoke in Russian, but none the less it's actually an amazing advertisement. Only 60 seconds long and made me wish I lived there. Plus I can't remember the last time I heard or seen Naomi Campbell. The commercial is actually for a new Russian luxury apartment complex in Moscow called "Legend of Tsvetnoy". And if you're wondering why/how Naomi Campbell was picked as the ad's leading lady; the building is owned by her billionaire boyfriend Vladamir Doronin.

Black History: First Black Supermodel
Her first career breakthrough in modeling came after she decided to sidestep the agencies and go directly to fashion photographers leading to her getting the cover of the New York Times’ August 1967 fashion supplement. She became one of the first successful black models while still in her teens, and achieved worldwide recognition from the late 1960s into the early 1970s.
By 1972, she was offered the title role in the movie Cleopatra Jones, but when Sims read the script, she was appalled by the racist portrayal of blacks in the movie and turned it down. Sims ultimately decided to go into the beauty business for herself. In 1973, she retired from modeling to start her own business which created a successful wig collection fashioned after the texture of straightened black hair. It eventually expanded "into a multimillion-dollar beauty empire and at least five books on modeling and beauty."
And while not the only black model in the 60’s she did help pave the way for many others.

New Superhero Trailers
The world has been waiting for a few months now to get their first look at the new Captain America movie due out this summer... I don't know about the world but after watching the trailer during the Super Bowl last night, I was unimpressed. I know that it's unfair and unreasonable to judge an entire movie based on a 30 second trailer but first impression are important right? While Captain America certainly has potential to be great, his costume at first glance looks a little Geeky and the action scenes seemed a little underwhelming, however I hope that i'm proved wrong when a few more trailers drop.
The Norse God of Thunder, Thor looks to be a classic Marvel movie in the making. From the scenes shown, it appears that very close attention to detail was paid not only to the characters but especially to realm of Asgard (home of the Norse Gods), where the environment comes off as serious and awe inspiring instead of shiny and corny.
The Deceptacons launch an all-out-assault on Earth is what I’m guessing happens this time around, it's hard to figure out what's going on from this Trailer, however Optimus Prime looks awesome! I hope the story is much better than Transformers 2 but one thing this movie won't lack is action.

His career in art began as a graffiti artist in the late 1970s and 80s however he became one of the leaders of the Neo-expressionist movement, eventually collaborating with Andy Warhol from 1984-1986.
Basquiat was infamous for painting all-night in $1,000 Armani suits and often appearing in public the next day wearing the same paint-splattered suit. In February 1986, he graced the cover of The New York Times Magazine in a feature entitled "New Art, New Money: The Marketing of an American Artist". He was one of the successful artists of his time, however increasing drug addiction eventually led to his early death on August 12, 1988.

Black History: First Black to Build a Billion Dollar Company
I read Reginald Lewis' biography (Why Should White Guys Have All The Fun?) my junior year in college (around the time that I was ready to drop out) and I was instantly inspired. Lewis was a very driven individual at a very young age with an incredible work ethic, that very same work ethic eventually led him to being one of the wealthiest African American's in American history.
Reginald F. Lewis (December 7, 1942 – January 19, 1993), was an American businessman, who was one of the most successful business leaders during the 1980s. He was the richest African American man in the 1980s. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he grew up in a middle class neighborhood. He won a football scholarship to Virginia State College (now Virginia State University), graduating with a degree in economics in 1965. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1968.
In 1992, Forbes magazine listed Lewis among the 400 richest Americans with a net worth estimated at $400 million. He also was the first African American to build a billion dollar company.

Black History: The First Black Millionaire
Black History Month is upon us! I try to watch Roots all the way through every Feb. (unsuccessful thus far) but to help you do something positive during this special month we decided to provide you with a little information about some of the brave, innovative, and inspiring people that paved the way for us to be who and where we are today:
Madam C.J. Walker (December 23, 1867 – May 25, 1919), was an African-American businesswoman, hair care entrepreneur and philanthropist. She made her fortune by developing and marketing a hugely successful line of beauty and hair products for black women under the company she founded, Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company. At her death she was considered to be the wealthiest African-American woman in America and known to be the first self-made female American millionaire.
