Nino Brown Takeover
I didn't end up going to sleep until like 3am because New Jack City was on repeat all night. Now by no means am I suggesting anyone start selling crack/meth or anything of that nature, and I especially don't want anyone to attempt to take over an entire complex to hustle out of, i'm sure that's still frowned upon but you've got admit that Nino Brown's rise to power was inspiring! The Cash Money Brothers (CMB) took over the city in one fell swoop, by removing all competition, securing prime real estate, and cornering the market.
The scene above really had me thinking how having a successful business is all about being new, having a new product or presenting something old in a new way. We spend a lot of time trying to make sure that Demeanor is blazing it's own path and not just following trends and we hope that shows in the products that we put out, hopefully we'll be having our own takeover very soon. Anyway, back to the whole drug dealing thing don't get any ideas people, because this happened later in the movie!

The Bobby Hundreds List
Anyone that’s ever spoken to me about my brand or asked my inspiration for designing or building a clothing line know for a fact that my favorite designer is Bobby Hundreds. The guy is an inspiration to me in not only how he has/is successfully growing his business (4 stores now) but also for how he still manages to keep everything limited and exclusive. So when he came up with the list of 50 of the Greatest Streetwear Brands for Complex I read through it a few times jotting notes and taking inspiration from each brand so have a read through and see where everything we’re doing now started! Oprah Winfrey Charging $1 Million For Ads
The Rich Keep Getting Richer! The Oprah Winfrey Show will be charging $1 million for 30-second commercials during the show's May 25 finale. To me, a million bucks for a 30-second commercial spot is crazy, but the $1 million asking price was short of being the highest in history. In 2004, the Friends finale charged $2 million for 30-second commercials; while Seinfeld's finale in 1998 earned $1.42 million per commercial.

Black History: First Black Supermodel
Naomi Ruth Sims (March 30, 1948 - August 1, 2009) is widely credited as being the first African American supermodel, she was also a businesswoman and author. Her first career breakthrough in modeling came after she decided to sidestep the agencies and go directly to fashion photographers leading to her getting the cover of the New York Times’ August 1967 fashion supplement. She became one of the first successful black models while still in her teens, and achieved worldwide recognition from the late 1960s into the early 1970s.
By 1972, she was offered the title role in the movie Cleopatra Jones, but when Sims read the script, she was appalled by the racist portrayal of blacks in the movie and turned it down. Sims ultimately decided to go into the beauty business for herself. In 1973, she retired from modeling to start her own business which created a successful wig collection fashioned after the texture of straightened black hair. It eventually expanded "into a multimillion-dollar beauty empire and at least five books on modeling and beauty."
And while not the only black model in the 60’s she did help pave the way for many others.Monday, February 7, 2011

Black History: First Black to Build a Billion Dollar Company

I read Reginald Lewis' biography (Why Should White Guys Have All The Fun?) my junior year in college (around the time that I was ready to drop out) and I was instantly inspired. Lewis was a very driven individual at a very young age with an incredible work ethic, that very same work ethic eventually led him to being one of the wealthiest African American's in American history.
Reginald F. Lewis (December 7, 1942 – January 19, 1993), was an American businessman, who was one of the most successful business leaders during the 1980s. He was the richest African American man in the 1980s. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he grew up in a middle class neighborhood. He won a football scholarship to Virginia State College (now Virginia State University), graduating with a degree in economics in 1965. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1968.
In 1992, Forbes magazine listed Lewis among the 400 richest Americans with a net worth estimated at $400 million. He also was the first African American to build a billion dollar company.

Black History: The First Black Millionaire

Black History Month is upon us! I try to watch Roots all the way through every Feb. (unsuccessful thus far) but to help you do something positive during this special month we decided to provide you with a little information about some of the brave, innovative, and inspiring people that paved the way for us to be who and where we are today:
Madam C.J. Walker (December 23, 1867 – May 25, 1919), was an African-American businesswoman, hair care entrepreneur and philanthropist. She made her fortune by developing and marketing a hugely successful line of beauty and hair products for black women under the company she founded, Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company. At her death she was considered to be the wealthiest African-American woman in America and known to be the first self-made female American millionaire.

2010 Wrap-Up (Yeah We're Late)
2010 was a great year for the Demeanor Family! Last year we officially launched our clothing line, we put out some dope products that were very well received (just about every shirt we released sold out immediately), we achieved much more than we thought possible in only 6 months, and we learned a lot about not only the business but ourselves.
In early December we sat down and hammered out the details of not only our company, but the plan for expanding and growing as a lifestyle brand in 2011. We’re very excited for what this year will bring us, from fashion shows (more details on that later), to projects with music, as well collaborations with other clothing lines, and bigger better Demeanor events. So while we are looking forward to the great things to come in this New Year, we just wanted to thank everyone who has supported our brand from day one by buying products, showing up to events, sharing ideas, and reaching out to us, we promise Greatness this year!
A quick look back:
Photoshoot
After we sold out of our first few batches of shirts we decided it was about to that we had a photoshoot. So in true Demeanor fashion we did everything ourselves, we called up some friends and family, hit the studio, blasted our mixtape, mixed in some Remy, and took some photos with great results. (By the time I edit and put out the video it'll probably be 2012 but I do have it).

Mixtape Release:
Hosting a mixtape was a big deal for us, it was something that we talked about doing almost as soon as we launched, so it was great to see everything come together as seamlessly as it did, and a big thank you to everyone who actively participated in the mixtape! Trust me we have much more on the way.
Jon P. (DJ P. Knock) has been part of the fam since day one and he's the only DJ we're rocking with!Launch:
I don't know if anyone will admit it or not but we were all kind of nervous the day we launched our clothing line. It was a lot to deal with, we working super hard to have our website launched the night before, we were still scrambling to pick up our shirts the day of, not to mention all the set up and money that went into throwing a huge cookout in memory of our brother Jeff (R.I.P.).Thursday, December 23, 2010
GOOGLE Buys New York Office Building For $1.9 Billion
This past Wednesday, GOOGLE purchased one of the largest and most historic buildings in all of the Big Apple for the price of $1.9 billion. It's amazing to see how far GOOGLE has come, to have started GOOGLE NY in a Starbucks on 86th Street with only one person in 2000. Now with a workforce of more than 2000 employees, it's almost no surprise that this 18 story building was a necessity. This building is so large it is equipped with a helicopter landing pad on the roof; and not to mention, it has elevators large enough to accommodate 18-wheel semi trucks. Friday, December 17, 2010
